Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. College Scholarship Program

The Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. College Scholarship program awards a one-time $5,000 scholarship to one female and one male high school senior who participate in cross-country or track. Applicants must reside within the 11-county metro area: Anoka, Carver, Chisago, Dakota, Hennepin, Isanti, Ramsey, Scott, Sherburne, Washington, and Wright counties.

Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. is happy to announce that Michelle Volz of Lakeville North High School and Samuel Seehof of Minnetonka High School are the recipients of the 2009 Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. College Scholarship. Volz and Seehof will each receive $5,000. They were chosen from a field of more than 85 very qualified candidates, based on running accomplishments, academic performance, community service and a personal essay.

Michelle Volz, earned 12 varsity letters in her athletic career in cross country running, track and nordic ski and graduated with a 4.19 GPA from Lakeville North High School.  She also was on the National Honor Society, a member of Student Council and the co-founder of the Yoga Club while at Lakeville North.  She said her favorite thing about running is "the feeling at the end of the race where you are at your absolute limit, but you push yourself that little bit harder to make it to the end."  Since her running career began in the seventh grade, Michelle has been an all-state athlete nine times, all conference athlete 10 times and was the state individual 1600-meter champion in 2007.  She will attend the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota where she plans to study biomedical engineering and plans to run for the University.

Samuel Seehof is a three-year varsity letter recipient in cross-country and two-year recipient in track, in addition to carrying a 4.412 GPA in the International Baccalaureate program at Minnetonka High. He is editor of the school newspaper, an Executive Cabinet Member of the Student Government, co-captain of the Math Team and a member of the National Honor Society--all while holding down two jobs throughout his high school career. Sam's coach Chris Cohen said that it is Sam's "ability to excel and serve in a number of school-wide activities that sets him apart." His activities run the gamut, including four years of post-football game trash collection as a fundraiser for the cross-country team. Sam will be attending Dartmouth College.
